my story

I am a professional listener. My philosophy of therapy is that people seek therapy when a problem is identified and perceived as too difficult to resolve alone. It takes courage to seek help, and I am so glad that you are here. I believe that individuals, couples and families have the strengths to solve life’s obstacles, yet they may benefit from additional support to do so. I incorporate warmth, humor, and authenticity into my practice in order to effectively create a collaborative therapeutic-client relationship. My dog, Toast, may occasionally join us as well.

I was born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska. I earned my bachelor of arts degrees at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts. After teaching for a year abroad, I landed in Portland, Oregon to complete a three year master's in counseling program in Marriage and Family Therapy from Lewis and Clark Graduate School. This program had a focus in multiculturalism and dedication to social justice which helped me to develop intercultural sensitivity and cultural competency. At Lewis and Clark, I also had the opportunity to work towards a certification in Ecopsychology. Growing up in Alaska gave me endless opportunities to develop a close relationship with nature and that relationship has been essential to my own well-being. In the Ecopsychology program, I was able to explore my own relationship with nature and expand my knowledge in the field to incorporate an eco-therapeutic practice in my work as a therapist. In therapy, I use an integrative, person-centered therapy approach that draws from my training in Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, The Gottman Method of Couples Therapy, Narrative Therapy and Trauma-informed interventions.

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) recognized by the Alaska Board of Marital and Family Therapy. Prior to the past three years in private practice, I have eight years of experience providing therapy in a variety of community mental health settings in both Oregon and Alaska with the majority of those years being spent at Anchorage Community Mental Health Services and Southcentral Foundation. My time at ACMHS and SCF brought me extensive experience in working with children, adolescents, individuals, couples and elders from all walks of life. I identify as an ally to the LGBTQA+ community, I value all clients and I attempt to understand issues from the lens of culture, socio-economic status, ethnicity, race and spiritual beliefs.

i am in-network with Blue Cross and Aetna. if you have other health insurance that i am considered out-of-network with, i am happy to provide a superbill for you to submit your own claim to your insurance company. i will ask you to first call your insurance company to see what your benefits end eligibility coverage is like and what they will cover prior to engaging in services.

i do offer virtual telehealth services if that is what you prefer. let's connect about that first and see if it is the best fit for what support you are looking for.

Good Faith Estimate

Beginning January 1, 2022, the No Surprises Act (H.R. 133) went into effect. The law includes new requirements for health care providers, facilities, health plans and insurers which are intended to prevent consumers (i.e. clients or patients) from receiving unanticipated medical bills. Regulations on good faith estimates requires all health care providers to provide good faith estimates of expected charges for services offered to uninsured and self-pay patients. These new regulations set forth specific requirements for what these good faith estimates must contain.

When you set up services with Heidi Barnwell Counseling you will be provided with a verbal Good Faith Estimate (GFE) and will be given a written estimate once services begin. If you are a current client, you will be provided with a GFE as well.

We will discuss this more when we connect, but for additional information about your rights to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call 971-808-0121.

“Oh, the comfort, the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person; having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words, but to pour them all out, just as they are, chaff and grain together, knowing that a faithful hand will take and sift them, keep what is worth keeping, and then, with a breath of kindness, blow the rest away.”
